phpFreeChat is a free, simple to install, fast, customizable and multi languages chat that uses a simple filesystem for message and nickname storage. It uses AJAX to smoothly refresh (no flicker) and display the chat zone and the nickname zone. It supports multi-rooms (/join), private messages, moderation (/kick, /ban), customized themes based on CSS and plugins systems that allows you to write your own storage routines (ex: Mysql, IRC backends …), and your own chat commands!

not a bad start
i really enjoyed the chat, but there was a lot left to be desired. there should be a better interface. i didn't want to have to remove all of the links and rewrite the entire look of the chat. it should be more generic, having an admin page for the setup. the ability to easily add multiple channels (rooms) would have been a plus. i would truly rather run an IRC server and then integrate the java client into the a standard page from my current site.

Nice little FREE program
I was tired of wasting electicity running chatroom server at home. This program worked right after download. Sure you have to spend some time getting to know the index.php file, but this page is customizable with a little practice and reading. This program is a bargain for free, and a great learning lesson in PHP coding. Really easy to figure out if you have any experience at all in looking at code. I had this working and custumized in a day without any knowledge of code or this program. I cant wait to play with it more. Remember to backup your original index.php file before playing with it. Delete the cache files in the data/private/cache folder if you get stuck. Learn the identify command to confirm the admins and your set. It's all about the parameters for simple customization.

Sadly, I must agree with the others... while the description leads you to believe this program may be easy to install but accessing admin is a pain... Requires you to edit actual files which if you are not familiar with php you will fail. I was able to get our chat to work with some customizing, but the amount of work that is required to customize the chat is simply too time consuming. There are hundreds of free chats online, I recommend doing some searching via your search engine of choice. Hopefully the developers of this program will take this and other's feedback seriously and make a admin control panel which allows the program to REALLY be "simple to install" and "simple and fast to customize".

Never did find the admin control
While it did work, there is no way to control the admin portion of it, unless you wish to re-write scripts. Ended up uninstalling it.
