Pretty impressive
I was able to get it to work after a few frustrating weeks. So I was very pleasantly surprised to hear that they had added it to their "Automatic Applications" list. I immediately tried it out and was pleased with the results. It also seems to be optimized for speed, or at least it seems faster than the "manual" installation I have. One problem, though, was that it creates a "data" folder within the root folder, against the recommendations of Elgg documentation. Upgrading from the "manual" GoDaddy installation worked just fine. Overall, I'm very pleased with the software and will be testing it out with about 100 people soon.

Good System for experienced php programmers
Pro's; It has the plugins to make it a basic social site. It works with Ajax and flash and runs smoothly. It's also free and easy to use. Con's; you need php programming skills to modify it the way you want. for those who are looking for something they can install and go this is not the software for you. Over all this software works and reminds me of a couple other social programs that give you the basics and thats it. You have to roll up your sleeves and do alot of research to understand and modify the site. Im not one for that because i don't have the time or desire. hence, im sticking with Joomla because it has the options and function that is easy less work and it gets the job done. If you don't mind digging into your ftp program and editing the scripts yourself then i would use this free program, otherwise, you might want to look into a different program.

Ok it just takes some getting used to.i installed elgg. At first i didnt like it. Not compatible for other apps. I personally buy my scripts. expecially when it is to build a strong and stable social network. Right now i am running socialengine by far the BEST. for 250 and its very customizable.

Great platform!
I run several large networks on this platform, and its very powerful. Excellent architecture, very powerful access control and permissioning capabilities, and very easy to use and extend. Not sure what ismalls was talking about- definitely not a social network for bloggers, much more a highly extensible platform designed to ensure capcity to address very large and customised networks, whilst still easy to use for the smaller implementation. They market it as a "social application platform", and I think that sums it up quite well- allows you to build fully functional social applications with real commercial application.
