5 Star
5 Star for Zen Cart. Really easy for new users and has lots of features. The best thing is their support forum and free modules.

Not for me
Very hard to figure out. I just don't have that much spare time to research how to do every little configuration it needs. Guess it's back to PayPal!

Maybe not for total Beginners, but VERY Easy Overall
A lot of people post that this is not for beginners. For that level of beginner, aka knows NOTHING about HTML or even what FTP is, setting up your own e-commerce solution is probably not for you and you should try a third party store website that there is no web development involved, or hire someone to do it for you. For beginner Web Developers, though, Zen Cart is about as easy as it gets. Once you install, you can get themes online and upload them and they will be available in Zen Cart options, it's that easy. Start by choosing a design theme that is close to the Layout you are going for. Then, you can begin hacking at the template PHP and CSS files with very little knowledge of PHP needed. There is a basic header / footer setup common in many theme, not that much different from WordPress, where you can make your main design changes. Everything else is configurable thru the Zen Cart admin, and there is a bit of a learning curve there as there is with anything. You will want to go into the Modules and Layout Boxes and turn off or uninstall most of the modules you don't want / need. Set up your paypal and/or authorize.net options, shipping module settings, enter your products and their prices / weights / no. in stock, and you've pretty much got an online store. Done, and done. From there it's a matter of touching up your design for a smooth and consistent user experience, and then beyond that, you probably want to duplicate the store onto a DEV server somehwere else hire someone to add a feature or two that you might be missing, or tinker around with it for version 2, but at least you're already up and running about as fast as it gets! :-D

Coding and Debug Required
If you want anything more than off-the-shelf open source, be ready to work. In my opinion Zen Cart is more flexable than OS Commerce, however be careful when attempting to use templates as come of the modifications may need to be made to php and css files. The biggest issue I have found is lack of support on a module for my merchant account with eProcessing Network. The module off Zen Cart website is not very useful and unfortnatly authorize.net emulation is just about as bad. I am being forced to re-write most of the code used to parse return codes and notes back to customer so they have an idea as to why their card may have failed. The second drawback is with shipping module, however after getting up to speed in my php skills writing the CC processing module, the shipping module modification should not be too bad. Note: The GoDaddy installed version has a lot of extra data (in database and folders) you should really clean-up before getting too far. Even after all this I really do like Zen Cart. Let me know if you need some help with mods, I may be able to help.
