Just wasnt what I was looking For
It is very simple, and even for someone who is starting out, kind of confusing.
Installed it --am UNinstalling It!
This forum software is NOT for anyone who wants a forum with design-features. It's plain and expect it to stay that way. The so-called add-ons they claim come with it do NOT work--I know, I've just wasted hours with it only to be told by the designer that the add-on or "plug-ins" typically "break" after an upgrade or never really worked with Vanilla right out of the box, which means you have to edit them yourself! Do you know how to write code for plug-ins? Well if you don't, you'd better learn, because you're going to have to know how if you want your forum to look like more than a string of letters on a page. But don't take my word for it: go to Vanilla's website and visit their community section and read for yourself the endless list of current issues with it...
I almost turned it into a behemoth using steriods (mean add-ons)
yes, out of the box looks simple but if you've the time, patience and little understanding on the coding part to fix simple things or add a bit of code here and there enhancing...most of it posted by the community members (for free), this one can really be made to work like a powerful forum/social networking app. After quite a bit of time I spent comparing, deliberating btw Vanilla, PHPBB and SMF (Simple Machine Forum), finally decided to go with Vanilla. spent about a week understanding and installing several add-ons, tweaking and tuning'em. It really looks very powerful now. it's like risk/reward situation, as some of the add-ons could break the complete install and could considerable amount of courage and some focused time to fix the bugs.
Excellent for a VERY SIMPLE forum
Not much administrative control, but as it is, it works really well. Just know that this package is VERY LIGHTWEIGHT out of the box - use something else if you want to have much management power!
