Good, Basic CMS
If you are having problems with the installation here on GoDady (including not getting your questions answered), I'd advise you to un-installation and re-install MODx. I don't know if it was an "operator error," but I had to reinstall several times to get it to work right. One time I tried to go under the hood to fix it myself (like any man), but I just made it worse. Save the time and re-install. Maybe I should not try to be as clever and go with the program? That said, MODx makes it easy to create human-readable URLs for each page (needed for search engines). Templates are easy to create and modify if you know (X)HTML. There are a large number of apps to add to help you, such one for the table of contents. Be sure to read the instructions when planning to use an app. More importantly, be sure you are reading about an app for the version of MODx in GoDaddy's installation. (Call it the voice of experience.) I wish you could use third-level domains with this version of MODx, but you can't right now. It appears that the beta version on the MODx website will allow you to use third-level domains. So, I wait.
Intuitive and powerful
I am no coder and this is my first time using a cms so I admit I have no comparison. So far, I have been able to do all I needed. Set up a css template and make it work. The beginner's guide to modx was enough to introduce me to the general CMS contept and get me started in modx, so far I have always been able to find an answer either by googling or in the guide pretty quickly. Every day though I am amazed that whatever extension I can think of, it usually is there pre-made. It took my 5 minutes to implement breadcrumbs or make the menu builder (wayfinder) to do what I wanted. So far, a pleasant experience.
ok but could be better
modx is ok but it could be better you have to have a understanding of php in order to get it all to work the way you want and support isn't there. you'll see posts of the same BASIC question again and again with no answer. Besides that its cool. good look and flow and control
Modx is so easy and you can do anything.
With all the CMS programs you need to know a bit of php. Mambo took me hours to find the logo file and then I had to change my logo name to what it was already in mambo. To add adsense I needed to learn php. With modx you are dealing with an html page that you add the features of modx to. So as you learn modx you can just hard wire things to your html page until you learn to wire it to modx. Your not dead in the water like all the other CMS systems. That means you have total freedom as to the design of your page. Create any page with any editor put it up and depending on how much you have learned about modx you add these features onto your html page. Like if I want to use modx to manage my content I would use modx to write my content and them add the tag [content] into my html code where I'd want that content to go. It is a great help to know a bit about coding but again working with all the other CMS's I found you need a lot more coding if you want any thing yours in the page. There are also a lot of great and beautiful templates out there for modx(because any template will work with modx). Also making changes to these templates no special coding is needed for them to work with modx.
I'm really liking this system
I've had this up for five months now and this is perfect for what I need. All the basic functions I wanted are built in but the framework allows me to customize as well. There is a complete separation of presentation and code. And the code interface is built into the framework in an easy to access way. The presentation layer is fully controlled by css. You need a minimum of css skills and html to really use this. In order to customize you need at least basic php. If your customization needs more data than is normally captured you need to know how to create MySQL tables and queries. If you have these skills the framework removes a lot of the overhead and just lets you get to the custom module you want to create.
